The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) wants further evidence before it can proceed with action on a petition against President John Mahama following his receipt of a car gift from a contractor.

CHRAJ has asked the youth wing of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to clarify the capacity in which it made the complaint against the President.

A letter signed by Director in Charge of Anti-Corruption at the Commission, Ayamdoo Charles, also wants the party to provide concrete evidence that the President erred in accepting the gift apart from the claims published in the media.

CHRAJ wants this further evidence  to be provided by July 20,2016.

The youth wing of the CPP petitioned CHRAJ in June to look into President Mahama’s acceptance of a Ford Expedition gift from Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe.

The petitioners hold that the President breached the law regulating the conduct of public office holders when he accepted the car gift, valued at $100,000.

The Burkinabe contractor had previously won two contracts from government and was bidding for another one when he backed out after revelations he has once presented an expensive gift the President.

Following the exposé government issued a release to explain that the vehicle in question has been added to the Flagstaff House pool of cars, dismissing allegations of bribery and conflict of interest.

Although the CPP flag bearer, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, has said he sees nothing wrong with the President’s acceptance of the gift, the youth wing of the party, led by its Youth Organizer, Ernesto Yeboah, has been critical of the President’s decision to accept the gift.

Ernesto Yeboah and the party’s General Secretary, Nii Armah Akomfrah, are currently serving a suspension over their comments about the matter.
