The National Forestry Forum is calling for more transparency in the sharing of forest resources. Newly-elected President of the Forum, Kwame Asamoah Dwomoh, says royalties and benefits from forest resources should be shared equally among communities. Such a move he believes will give the communities a sense of ownership to better protect and manage the nation’s forest resources. Mr. Asamoah Dwomoh says this will also slow down the rapid rate of forest degradation in the country. He spoke to Luv News at the 4th National Forestry Forum in Kumasi. The Civil Society organization aims to promote good forest governance in Ghana by providing a multi-stakeholder platform for engagements in the management of the nation’s forest resources. This is at a time when the world is calling for all increased awareness on strengthening the sustainable management, conservation and development of the forests for the benefit of the current and future generations. Mr. Dwomoh noted the forum will seek the enforcement of a law on the percentage retention of lumber by sawmills as a means to discourage chain saw operators. The immediate past Secretary of the Forum, Doreen Yeboah appealed to all who believe in the “Forest People” to come to the aid and support the worthy course of the Forest Forum. She believes the nation can manage her forest sustainably and ensure the perpetual flow of benefits to all segments of society. Nine new executives of the Forum were elected and sworn into office at the 4th National Forestry Forum.
