The cordial relationship that exist between the people of Dangmweo and Zongo communities in the Bolgatanga Municipality was severed following a bloody clash involving the youth on Sunday, August 14, 2011 over a parcel of land.
Traditionally, Zongo and Dangmweo Communities fall under the Dangmweo Traditional Area, but they fall under separate Electoral Areas, with Dangmweo being under Dangmweo Electoral Area while Zongo falls under the Zongo Electoral Area.
The said land is located in front of a compound house belonging to one Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu, an Islamic Scholar.
Information reaching Daily Guide indicates that the piece of land belongs to government.
The paper gathered that the family of Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu approached the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly for permit to mount a store on a portion of the land in front of the compound house.
According to reports, there is a tussle between the leadership of Dangmweo community and Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu over who has the right to use the land.
An eyewitness told the Dally Guide that on the morning of Sunday, August 14, 2011, that the sons of Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu were laying foundation blocks when some three young persons, who said they were sent by the leadership of Dangmweo, approached them.
The eyewitness said though he does not know what exactly happened, one of the youth from the Dangmweo side pushed one of the blocks down with this leg, which resulted in short fight between the youth from Dangmweo and Alhaji Yakubu’s children.
To the surprise of the eyewitness, the youth from Dangmweo went back and in no time a mob from the Dangmweo side rushed towards the house of Alhaji Yakubu, which is at the entrance of the Zongo community.
Soon, beatings, destruction and stone throwing spread across the Zongo Community and people, who were attacked unaware, had to run away.
A barbering shop, a butcher’s table, some salon cars and the windscreen of a KIA truck belonging to ‘Neat Water’ were destroyed.
Pipe lines were also damaged during the mob attack on the Zongo side and a number of persons from both side sustained varying degree of injuries.
Afterward, a large number of personnel came to separate the two factions.
The eyewitness said in the afternoon the youth from the Dangmweo side crossed the ECOWAS trunk road with the aim of surrounding Alhaji Yakubu’s house and few houses around for a total attack, but the Police discovered the plan and fired warning shots to disperse the youth.
It is feared that the brawl may last longer if the problems are not addressed.
The Upper East Regional Police, PRO Chief Inspector Thomas Agbanyor told Daily Guide that the parcel of land in front of Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu’s house would be guarded by police personnel day and night till further notice.
When this reporter went to the Dangmweo group for their side of the story, the youth chased him and a Metro a TV correspondent away, threatening to beat them up if they don’t leave.
