Lawyers for former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, have indicated their intention to challenge a court decision that ordered his remand in police custody in connection with a land dispute at Kitase in the Eastern Region.
The legal team says it will file an appeal on Tuesday, March 17, at the Koforidua High Court, seeking to overturn the ruling of the Akropong Circuit Court and secure his release pending the determination of the case.
Mr Blay was remanded on Monday, March 16, after appearing before the circuit court over allegations linked to a disputed parcel of land.
The matter reportedly stems from a complaint lodged by an individual claiming ownership of the property, who accused him of engaging in unlawful activities on the land.
Following the complaint, police invited Mr Blay to assist with investigations. However, the situation escalated, leading to his arrest and subsequent arraignment before the court.
After considering preliminary aspects of the case, the court directed that he be held in custody while investigations continue, a decision his lawyers have strongly contested.
Counsel for Mr Blay, Gregory Asiedu, described the remand as unwarranted and expressed confidence that the decision would be reviewed.
Speaking after proceedings, he confirmed that steps were already underway to challenge the ruling.
“The appeal will be filed at the High Court in Koforidua,” he said, adding that the team would also seek bail for their client.
