The running mate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is doubtful the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections will be free and fair.

Bridget Dzorgbenuku believes there is uncertainty surrounding the credibility of the polls following the numerous court cases and allegations against the Electoral Commission by some parties in the run up the elections.

Speaking on the current affairs programme The Pulse on JOYNEWS channel Multi TV, she challenged the Electoral Commission (EC) to do the right thing as it prepares to conduct the polls.

"There is a lot of mistrust and most people are unsure because of all the things that have happened; cases in court, allegations from one party to another, the allegations of the bloated register, so free and fair is going to be difficult," she observed. 

However, she said the Party is hopeful that the 'right thing' would be done on that day [election day] by most Ghanaians who are interested in the peace of the country.  

She said anythings can happen as "there can be cheating, rigging and a few days ago there were issues of some the papers [pink sheets] which didn't have serial numbers and we were concerned about that." 

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the decision by the EC to print results forms (Form Eight) popularly referred as Pink Sheets without serial numbers is illegal.

However, the Commission said the allegations that the Commission was scheming to rig the December elections by printing the Statement of Poll and the Declaration of Results forms, commonly referred to as Pink Sheets, without serial numbers is untrue and unbecoming of a political party.

“It very regrettable for a political party to engage in pre-emptive allegations and suspicions with the intention to unnecessarily heighten public tensions ahead of the elections,” the EC statement said in a statement.  

Madam Dzorgbenuku said Ghanaians should ensure that the pink sheets to be used for the presidential and parliamentary elections are serialised.
