Former Chief of Staff, Nana Ato Dadzie has called for an end to illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, stressing that it should no longer be an issue in Ghana.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, February 1, the veteran lawyer and politician described galamsey as a severe threat to the nation's future.
He expressed concern over the continued destruction caused by illegal mining, despite efforts to curb the menace.
According to Nana Ato Dadzie, galamsey poses an existential threat, not only to the environment but also to public health and the nation’s water resources.
He lamented the lack of effective measures to combat the practice, highlighting that the country appears to be losing the fight against it.
“Galamsey should have been a thing of the past. It’s an existential threat. The health of our people, our water bodies, and everything is being destroyed, and we seem not to be fighting it,” he stated.
He further urged the government and stakeholders to take stronger and more decisive action in addressing illegal mining.
He emphasised that protecting Ghana’s natural resources should be a top priority, as the current state of affairs could have long-term consequences on the country’s development.
Nana Ato Dadzie warned that if immediate steps are not taken, future generations will suffer from the effects of environmental degradation.
