Executive Committee member of the Ghana Football Association George Afriyie says suggestions for Avram Grant should to take charge of the local Black Stars are not misplaced.
Ivory Coast have their main national team coach, Michel Dussuyer, taking charge of the home=based team as well. Other Africa countries such as South Africa, DR Congo and Nigeria all practice the same system.
The last time Ghana did that was in 2009 when Serbian manager Milovan Rajevac took the local Black Stars to the maiden CHAN tournament in Congo - and the team got to the final.
Some football pundits want that system brought back.
Afriyie in an interview with Joy Sports noted that it makes sense to revert to the old system.
“It makes some sense because first we need to look at how many times we have participated in the CHAN competition, we have been to three editions and at the maiden one we had the main coach of the Black Stars (Milovan Rajevac) in charge of the local team which worked for us,” he told Joy Sports.
“At the second edition it was a different coach in the person of Herbert Addo and it didn’t work, at the third edition it was Maxwell Konadu and we managed to reach the finals but we can emphatically say that if we have to look into the future those making that argument for having the national team coach as head of the home based stars sounds good.
“I was one of those who thought it was good to have a separate coach for the two teams but it is only a fool who doesn’t change his mind and when over a time you realise the decision taken in the past didn’t help matters why not.
“I don’t think those clamouring for the head coach of the Black Stars to take charge of local Black Stars doesn’t have a case, they do have a very strong case.”
The calls by football pundits and fans to have the old system restored come at the back of the Local Black Stars failure to reach the 2016 CHAN tournament in Rwanda.
