A District Court in Accra has convicted a German to a fine of GH¢3,000, for angrily tearing into pieces, a default notice, of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL).
The court found Dirk Daumen guilty of causing damage to public property but acquitted and discharged him on a charge of assault.
Daumen in default, will serve six months imprisonment with hard labour.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kofi Annan, told the Amasaman District Court that, on July 30, last year, at about 0930 hours, Mr Prince Amankwandor, a survey assistant of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited, who was on his official duty, went to Achimota to serve the wife of Daumen, who produced sachet water, with a final default notice.
The final default notice indicated that Daumen's wife, as at July 30, last year, owed AVRL GH¢2,057.88.
The prosecution said, Daumen's wife was not at home and Amankwandor was directed to see the accused person.
The prosecutor said Amankwandor handed over the default notice letter to Daumen but after reading it, he tore it into pieces.
This led to a quarrel between the two men and in the process, he assaulted Mr Amankwandor.
Chief Inspector Annan said Amankwandor reported the case to the Mile Seven Police where he was issued with a medical report to attend hospital for examination.
