Sometimes it was too easy. Ghana had freedom of the park in front of a poor crowd at the Accra Sports Stadium for long spells in this Nations Cup qualifying against a poor Mozambique side and made the most of it.
Frank Acheampong, John Boye and Jordan Ayew scored the goals for the Black Stars before Apson Majante pulled one back for the Mambas in a 3-1 win that keeps the Black Stars on course for a place at the 2017 Nations Cup.
The Black Stars now top group H by nine points after three wins with Rwanda and Mauritius behind them on three points each ahead of their meeting. Mozambique meanwhile remain pointless after their third defeat in qualifying.
Ghana’s Nations Cup qualifying campaign is going according to script and at this stage they could be out of sight by the time the next meeting of the two sides is over on Sunday in Maputo.
The only worry for coach Avram Grant from an easy afternoon’s shift was the injuries to key players including stand in captain John Boye, Frank Acheampong and Mubarak Wakaso. Christian Atsu said afterwards too that he feels some pains in his legs that will need attention.
Otherwise it was the perfect afternoon that got off to the perfect start.
Ghana has strengthened it’s grip on group H of the 2017 Nations Cup qualifying campaign after the Black Stars strolled to a win over Mozambique at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Christian Atsu said: “All we wanted was to win. They made it difficult for us in the first half even though we were creating a lot of chances. But we worked hard and managed to get through. Our aim is to qualify for Afcon. We have the points but we will remain focused.”
Ghana now top group H by nine points after three wins with Rwanda and Mauritius behind them on three points each ahead of their meeting. Mozambique meanwhile remain pointless after their third defeat in qualifying.
They will be hoping to change that grim statistic in Maputo on Sunday when they host the Black Stars for whom at least three players were forced off with various injuries.
Mubarak Wakaso hobbled off midway through the first half in his first game back from injury before John Boye followed not long afterwards. It was all way before Frank Acheampong had gone off injured too.
It means the medical department of the side will be kept busy but the technical team led by Avram Grant will be delighted with the fact that his first game back after the storm over his long stays abroad went well.
Grant’s agent saw the opportunity to take a dig at the Ghana media but this win was as expected as it was routine. Mozambique have been miserable in qualifying for the 2017 Nations Cup and they barely made a fight of it here in Accra.
