The Central Regional branch of the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association has appealed to the government to build two more psychiatric hospitals in the middle and northern sectors of the country.
The President of the association, Mr Yakubu Imoro said the suggestion will help cope with the increasing number of mental patients in the said areas.
He made the appeal during the celebration of the association's annual sports week programme at Cape Coast.
Some 300 psychiatric nurses drawn from Ankaful, Cape Coast hospitals and Esiama in the Western region are attending the programme.
Mr Imoro appealed to family members and relatives of mental patients to show concern and support them to enable them recover quickly.
He said it was sad that some families, after sending their mental relatives to the hospital, refused to visit them and in some cases would not accept them back after treatment.
