The Ghana Water Company says it is facing serious challenges in the recovery of its production cost due to illegal connections and low tariffs.
The water company insists that will affect its drive to ensure reliable supply of water at all times.
Speaking to Joy News, Communications Director of the company Stanley Martey said “I can say on authority that we are not breaking even as a company because people are stealing the water through illegal connections, through by passes and other malpractices against the company”.
According to him the company is fortunate to have support from government and because their operations are continues, the little money the company gets is invested back into the business.
He said their tariffs are not sustainable but the company is managing the system and that if it had not been for prudent management the company would have collapsed by now.
To address challenges the company is facing Mr. Martey said the company has developed a digital mapping system to track all properties in Ghana to ensure that consumers pay for the water they use.
This will help ascertain if they have access to water and are legal customers of the company.
The company he says is hopeful that when this system is replicated throughout the country it will be able to capture almost every property.
The Ghana Water Company is responsible for the treatment and distribution of clean water to all parts of the country.
