Ghana won five awards at the 2010 Model United Nations Session for Middle and High Schools in the United States of America. Ghana's Edith Amoafa Smart from Queensland International School won honourable mention at the UNICEF committee at the UN Headquarters in New York while Esther Dzifa Tolbert, Englebert School; Peter Fletcher from Queensland International School won the Best Delegates Award for UNICEF; Kennedy Dery, SAPS school and Okyerefo Eric from Queens International School won the United Nation Awards at the U.S State Department in Washington DC. Communications Director of Lifelink Friendship Schools, organisers of the trip, Emmanuel Arthur told the Daily Graphic the session discussed human trafficking, access to education, Afghanistan and economic development. The Executive Director of Lifelink Friendship Schools, Ernest Gyimah-Danquah said Ghana participated in the annual sessions for the fifth time and said the experiences have been worthwhile. "We have succeeded in ensuring many young persons embrace and appreciate international diplomacy, dialoguing and consensus-building", said Ernest Gyimah-Danquah who led Ghana's 60-member student delegation to the April and May sessions. The annual event is organised by the Global Classrooms Project, the UN Association of USA and supported by global finance firm, Merriyl Lynch with the aim of grooming young persons in global politics and international diplomacy. Assistant Secretary for International Organisations Dr. Esther Brimmer hope that the model un experience will deepen ongoing interests and engagement in foreign affairs issues among young people.
