After swine flu infections killed four students at Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) and meningitis claimed at least three lives of SHS students, Ghanaian parents are worried about the safety of their wards in boarding schools.
Health authorities are under pressure, taking the blame for their inadequate response to the health crisis while every headmaster or headmistress remains on the look-out for any student who would complain of anything symptomatic of meningitis.
On Ghana Connect on Joy FM, host Evans Mensah was joined by Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Angel Carbonu and a first-year student in SHS. He will speak to us on condition of anonymity.
Alexander Yaw Danso is a parent and president of the National Parent Teacher Association. Dr. Franklin Asiedu Bekoe is also head of disease and surveillance at the Ghana Health Service.
Dr. John Krugu is the PRO for the Ghana Public Health Association.
They discussed a week of sick students and weak responses to the spread of infectious disease which could upset Christmas as students move back into homes from school.
