A renowned Architect and Urban Planner, Mr. Charles Essel, has urged workers in both the private and public sectors to boycott work and demand a proper national development planning  from the government.

He said this is the only way to avert future disasters as the country’s populations keep increasing.

“The ordinary people of this country especially from Accra and Kumasi from teachers, nurses, doctors and other both private and public workers must stop work and demand for proper development planning ”, Mr Essel asserted.

He believes that since the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is interested in the vote of the ordinary Ghanaians, the people must capitalize on that and demand for a proper reengineering of Accra and other major cities.

Mr. Essel was speaking Monday evening on Adom FM’s Burning Issues Program with Afia Pokua, which was also transmitted live on Asempa FM.

He said the devastating flood and fire disaster on Wednesday evening which claimed over 200 lives, destroyed properties running into millions of cedis and brought many businesses to a standstill on Thursday June 4 will recur unless citizens demand answers from the government.

“The hope is that most influential people in society must have the courage and get to the street and tell government to fix the problems of the nation else [they] vote against them”, Mr. Essel emphasized.

Mr Essel said he disagrees with suggestions that Ghana must establish a new capital city because Accra is becoming congested and lies too low,

“I don’t support the idea of relocating the capital town of Ghana from Accra to any other region” Mr. Charles Essel told Afia Pokua.
