Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams says Ghanaians will hoot at any political party which attempts to capitalize on the recent increase in petroleum products for political purposes.
He said the use of fuel prices as a propaganda tool to woo Ghanaians for votes has lost its effectiveness.
Kofi Adams' comments comes on the back of agitations by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the recent 15 to 30 per cent increase in fuel prices has compounded the already bad economic situation confronting Ghanaians.
The NPP asked whether the hedging initiative by government has not taken effect yet and also questioned the motive behind government’s decision to withdraw petroleum subsidies when in fact it promised to reduce fuel drastically.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC), Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and other social groups have also expressed worry over recent fuel price increases with some threatening to layoff some of its workers.
However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Kofi Adams said the recent fuel price increase is as a result of the rising crude oil prices on the international market.
He noted that there is the need for an upward adjustment in fuel prices to enable government undertake some developmental projects it promised Ghanaians.
Kofi Adams said the Mills-led government cannot be blamed for the fuel increment because an institution like the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has been tasked to deal with petroleum pricing.
The NDC deputy General Secretary said the days where some politicians held gallons of petrol on campaign platforms to confuse Ghanaians cannot be applicable in this year’s elections.
Kofi Adams opined that no political party would win this year’s election by using fuel increases as a major mantra for campaign.
