The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is calling for an amicable settlement of the impasse between management and staff of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
This comes as the senior staff association and registered nurses embarked on a demonstration last week demanding the removal of the Korle Bu CEO Gilbert Buckle.
Dr Buckle is accused of mismanaging the hospital and misappropriating funds, allegations he has denied. An administrative enquiry is however in place to ascertain the veracity of the claims.
The Senior Staff Association claimed that the CEO has been a failure. They cited various reasons including lack of medicines at the hospital’s pharmacy”
The president of the Association, Charles Ofei-Palm told Joy News “Things are not going on well in Korle-Bu…from so many points of view. Shortages all over the place…Why are we not being able to provide supplies? All the equipment have broken down. Things are running out of hand.”
A week after their call, nurses and midwives of the facility joined calls for Mr Buckle to be dismissed, enumerating similar concerns as the senior staff.
They wrote a letter to the Health Ministry and copied the presidency, demanding the dismissal of the CEO.
But the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr Justice Yankson says the cause of the rancour must be dealt with.
“Once he has got a personal contract with government, we don’t go in at all…The Board has come out to say he hasn’t done anything wrong…Well for me let’s leave it at that until any other evidence is brought forth to the contrary,” Dr Justice Yankson told Joy News.
