The Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT has distanced itself from a strike threat by the National Association of Graduate Teachers. NAGRAT is threatening to embark on a strike if its members are not migrated onto the Single Spine Salary Structure by the end of this month. Per the road map drawn by the Fair Wages Commission, all teachers in the public sector should be put on the new enhanced pay structure by the end of December. The Fair Wages Commission however says this will not be possible because of some challenges and that the teachers will have to wait until January. Though NAGRAT says it will have none of that, GNAT disagrees. Its Public Relations Officer, Peter Tetteh Korda told Joy News, rushing to put teachers onto the single spine policy will make them worse off. “It is better to finish resolving the issues that we are all involved in…than to pressurize the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and government into doing something [only] for us to return to the table and say ‘oh no, this is to our disadvantage, we should have done this, we should have done that,’” he said.
