Government is working on an arrangement that could soon see work begin on the upgrading of the Tamale Airport to receive international flights.
With the Kotoka International Airport being the only one of its kind, major airlines flying into Ghana may have to be diverted to airports of other neighboring countries should they be unable to land in Accra for any reason.
This the industry players believe would be unfortunate and calls for an urgent need for a local alternative.
Transport Minister Collins Dauda told Joy Business plans are far advanced.
“At the moment we are looking at securing proper title to the land,” he said.
“…We are going far with the arrangements with the land title and very soon we will finish up that and the Ghana Airport Development Company will go into partnership with any investor in developing Tamale into an international airport,’ he added.
He further stated that government is also working to expand facilities at Kotoka International Airport to accommodating the increase number of airlines.
