The government is set to launch a nationwide project to install streetlights in all major urban centres as part of efforts to enhance security and support the police in crime prevention, especially at night.
Announcing the initiative at the swearing-in of the new Police Governing Council, President John Mahama said the exercise is part of a broader strategy to improve public safety across the country.
“We will soon mount a massive exercise across the country to light up our cities. We will install streetlights in all major urban centres across the country,” the president stated.
“This will light up the country and assist you [the police] in your fight against crime at night.”
President Mahama also commended the Ghana Police Service for its recent achievements, including the arrest of suspected kidnappers in Nigeria and the safe return of Ghanaian victims.
“Let me commend the police management team for the successes you have chalked recently in the fight against armed robbery and also your collaboration with your Nigerian counterparts in apprehending the kidnappers in Nigeria and bringing their Ghanaian victims safely back home.”
Despite the progress, the president stressed the need for enhanced intelligence-led policing to tackle unresolved high-profile murder cases and maintain law and order.
