The Grace Baptist Church in Kumasi has disbursed close to Gh¢27,000.00 in educational grant to 79 financially distressed students. The amount is 50 percent higher than Gh¢18,000.00 given to 40 beneficiary students in 2010. In addition, the Church has created a Gh¢6,500.00 educational grant at its basic school to support needy students in the Church and others within the Amakom community, where the Church is situated. According to Head Pastor of the Church, Reverend Robert Kwadwo Asante, “the Church has taken it upon itself that anybody who comes into this church and shows that they have the academic ability, they shouldn’t fail to pursue their educational ambition just because they don’t have anybody to support them”. He said the budget will be expanded to Gh¢50,000.00 to take on board more people in the community. “Our vision is to make members disciples of Jesus, who are ministering to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of people” Rev. Asante said. The Baptist minister cautioned churches against the exploitation of its members but rather use church money for people’s welfare. Rev. Asante believes it is the responsibility of the church to care for the sick as demonstrated by Jesus Christ, emphasizing that God’s love can only be made manifest through support for the needy. “Most churches are doing very well with the sick soul issues but when it comes to sick bodies, a lot of us are found wanting. We want tohelp the physical needs of people and not just the spiritual”, he stated. Grace Baptist Church has for the past ten years pursued developmental projects under its holistic ministry of preaching and teaching the word of God, counseling and attending to the physical needs of people. The Church has placed people in apprenticeship programmes for skills acquisition for the job market and provided financial support for business start-ups. There are also arrangements to house the homeless whilst the aged and infirmed members receive a monthly allowance of Gh¢110.00 for their upkeep. The church also plans to construct borehole and toilet facilities for the community this year.
