Civil society group, Truth and Accountability Forum (TAF) has hinted of a massive demonstration in protest of recent increment in utility tariffs. The demonstration dubbed “yentua demo” to wit [we will not pay demonstration], according to the group, will be held in Accra and replicated nationwide. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 52 percent increment in water and 78.9 percent increment in electricity tariffs effective October 1. But in a statement issued in Accra Wednesday, TAF had tried to seek a court injunction to stop the PURC from adjusting the prices of electricity and water. The group believes Ghanaians have been short changed by the PURC. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Executive Director of TAF, Collins Kofi Amoah said they have given government and PURC 10 days to reverse the decision or face their wrath on October 3rd 2013. According to him, government has been insensitive to the plight of suffering masses in the face of what he describes as "gargantuan hardships" in the country. Mr. Amoah said they will hit the streets or use any other means within their reach to prevent this "absurd tariff increment from seeing the light of day". “We have already informed the police about the demonstration but if they don't grant us permission, we will go ahead and hire private security personnel to guide us to present our petition to the President” he stated. The Executive Director of TAF alleged that PURC has kowtowed to the whims and caprices of government by approving “stupendous” tariff to the detriment of the ordinary Ghanaian. He said the utility service providers deserve no increment for the poor services they have rendered over the years. “The various service providers over the last two years have failed to live up to their responsibilities but PURC has abnegated its constitutional mandate of monitoring and supervising but was quick to give nod for tariff increase. That clearly is an affront to the consumer,” he stressed. Collins Amoah called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join in the fight to send a strong signal to government about their disapproval.
