The decision by the NPP’s Appeals Committee to clear some disqualified parliamentary aspirants has been rejected by the Greater Accra Regional leadership of the party.

Led by regional chairman Ishmael Ashittey, the Greater Accra NPP explained that the report reinstating the disqualified aspirants showed pervasive “inconsistencies” and “a lot of mistakes”.

The regional chairman picked up on the example of Benjamin Armah Ashittey in the Tema East.

He said although the main body of the Appeals Committee report says Benjamin should be allowed to contest, the recommendations in the same report states that it has “reservations regarding his membership of TESCON,” a tertiary student’s wing of the party.

 “We feel we should not allow this report to stand so we are rejecting the report,” he told a news conference Tuesday.

Carlos Ahenkorah of the Tema West constituency and some three other aspirants were beneficiaries of the decision by the NPP’s Appeals Committee. They were cleared to go ahead to contest parliamentary primaries set for June 13.

In the Tema West constituency in particular, media attention deepened after an aspirant Carlos Ahenkorah accused Tema West MP Irene Naa Torshie Addo of masterminding his disqualification.

The Greater Accra regional party executives insist that they will be sticking to the report of the vetting committee.

By the vetting process, the constituency does the vetting and forwards its results to the Regional leadership who may to decide to confirm or reject the results.

Aggrieved aspirants may petition the Appeals Committee for a review of any particular disqualification.

In the Greater Accra region, seven such petitions were received by the Appeals committee.
