Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) has held its health and safety week celebration, under the theme ‘Health and Safety my responsibility’.
The safety week is commemorated annually across all Diageo subsidiary companies to highlight the importance of safety in its businesses.
Diageo is the parent company of GGBL.
"As a business, we are committed to a zero harm agenda. We need all our employees and contractors to come to work and go home safe every day. We will continue to put in place systems and processes across our sites to improve on the health and safety of our people", said Peter Ndegwa Managing Director of GGBL.
GGBL has been operating in Ghana since the 1970s and has continually implemented strategies that promote a safe and healthy environment for its employees and stakeholders, leading to the company winning remarkable awards such as the Best Company – Manufacturing excellence at the 2012 AGI, Ghana Industry Awards.
Activities carried out through the week included health screening for employees and fire simulation exercises in its Achimota site in Accra and Kaasi site in Kumasi, where its flagship headquarters is located.
The company also teamed up with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to educate market women in the Dome and Kaasi markets on fire prevention and combating strategies.
Andy Jones, Supply Director, GGBL said "our safety week celebration is important to us as a business and we find it necessary to share the safety message in communities in which we live and operate. We have heard stories of numerous market fires across the country including the Dome market which is located close to our Achimota brewery. We are confident the fire education by the GNFS will empower them in their place of work as well as in their homes."
The Deputy PRO of the Ghana National Fire Service Billy Anaglatey commended GGBL for supporting the GNFS in educating local communities especially local markets on fire prevention and how to combat fire and called on other corporate institutions to do same.
