Asamoah Gyan continued his goalscoring exploits as Al Ain thrashed Emirates Club 4-2 to earn a spot in the quarter-finals of the President’s Cup on Sunday.
Gyan, 26, was the pivot around which Al Ain staged a comeback as the Ghanaian scored twice, while Mohammad Abdul Rahman and Muhannad Salem got one each after they went behind to an early goal from Mohsin Mutawalli.
It is to Al Ain’s credit the way they responded after Mutawalli’s fourth-minute strike. The five-time champions kept themselves organised and fought back, with on-loan Sunderland star, Gyan, leading the onslaught.
Gyan netted the equaliser in the 17th minute when he beat the offside trap, controlled well and jabbed into the net.
The Ghanaian star could have made it two in the 39th minute, but his header floated just wide.
His scintillating form in the UAE has induced talks of an early recall to his parent club Sunderland during the January transfer period but Al Ain have stated clearly their determination to hold on to their goalscoring machine.
