The Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) formally NYEP has commenced orientation for the Community Motor Tricycle Project. The project which was launched in December last year is expected to train and employ some 10,000 youth across the country. The Community Motor Tricycle Project is under GYEEDA’s Youth in Community Transport Services. GYEEDA is partnering Asongtaba Cottage Industry and Exchange Programme (ACI&EP) a private company, to execute the training. A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Executive Director of Asongtaba, Henry Kangah said the Community Motor Tricycle Project will involve the use of purpose-made motor tricycles in the provision of diverse transport services at the community level except the transport of human beings. He expressed hope that the project will offer solution to critical socio-economic needs such as transportation of farm produce, goods in market areas and water supply in homes among others. Mr. Kangah said GYEEDA and Asongtaba have agreed to organize series of orientation programmes for master trainers throughout the month of January. “They have been contracted to carry out the training programme and are being schooled on the project outline and contract agreement as well as other vital information about the Community Motor Tricycle Project” said the Executive Director of Asongtaba. Training of beneficiaries for the project is expected to last for six months and will equip beneficiaries in motor tricycle repairs, maintenance and assembling. Beneficiaries will also be employed in the repair and maintenance aspect of the project. The statement said each region will train 1000 beneficiaries, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 10,000, adding that ACI&EP also intends establishing an ultramodern motor tricycle assembling plant to assemble motor tricycles locally. This will also provide permanent employment for some additional five thousand (5,000) Ghanaian youth. GYEEDA has expressed hope in the project, describing it as another effort by government to find sustainable job opportunities for her active youth who for unfortunate reasons many continue to dream of the day they will earn their own incomes. GYEEDA‘s Executive Director, Abuga Pele said the Youth in Community Transport Services is borne out of the commitment by both Private and Public Sector interest to create the platform to support sustainable self employment ventures for Ghanaian youth at the Community level. He assured the youth that the programme will bring onboard practical hands-on skills development and business setups that have corresponding demands at both the urban and rural settings.
