The Health and Education ministries have procured critical medicines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to tackle the outbreak of H1N1 influenza that hit Kumasi Academy and claimed the lives of four students.

The medicines include Tamiflu, an anti-viral agent, and H1N1 influenza vaccines.

A release issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday said: “Some students and staff have already received vaccinations.”

The KUMACA H1N1 influenza incident last week claimed the lives of four students but reported cases of meningitis at other secondary school campuses have sparked fears.

The outbreaks of the viral diseases have been blamed on congestion at the secondary schools following the commencement of the Free Senior High Schoo (SHS) programme.

So far, the death toll from the scourge of the two viral diseases on the campuses of Senior High Schools in three regions across the country has hit eight.

Bawku Senior Technical School also in the Upper East Region and Damongo SHS in the Northern Region have also suffered from suspected incidents of meningitis.

The latest case is the death of a student of Tempane SHS in the Upper East region who is believed have shown symptoms of meningitis.
