Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu has reaffirmed the new government’s commitment to improving and enhancing the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.
He was speaking as part of the ongoing discussions around education policies in the country.
Haruna Iddrisu emphasised that the government was determined to take all necessary steps to ensure that the Free SHS programme continues to evolve and deliver quality education to all eligible students across the nation.
"I assure the country that we will work to improve the quality of the free senior high school, to the essence of a reset and a review in the free senior high school is to improve its quality" he said while addressing Parliament on a recently held National Education Forum.
The Free SHS programme was first introduced by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017, aiming to provide free education at the secondary level for all Ghanaian students. This historic policy was designed to eliminate the financial burden on parents and guardians, ensuring that no child would be deprived of an education due to inability to pay school fees.
As part of his government’s education policy, President John Mahama has vowed to build on the successes of the Free SHS programme and address some of the challenges it has faced.
The government's efforts will focus on enhancing the overall educational experience for students, improving outcomes in both academic performance and skills development, to better prepare them for the future.
