Eight convicted armed robbers who broke jail at Takoradi did it in a Hollywood fashion.
The prisoners took hostage two of the prison officers who were on guard duties at the prison gates on Sunday, stabbed them several times with knives and knocked open the prison armoury, making away with seven G3 riffles with ten rounds of ammunition.
Three of the jail breakers are known to be armed robbers whose attempt to rob a bullion van at Gura Banso in the Western Region was foiled by police and were convicted to serve a prison sentence of 40 years each.
They are Ebenezer Tetteh, Rafael Laweh and Rafael Bouro, a Nigerian.
The three after their conviction and sentence, are said to have retorted that they would not spend a year in the four walls of the prison.
The Hollywood jail break
Prison officials say at around 1:00pm, a young man came to the prison yard under the guise of coming to visit the three convicts.
When they were called to receive the food the “visitor” had brought they suddenly took hostage of the officers at knife point, stabbing them in their backs to subdue them.
They forced the prison's armory open and started sharing the G3 guns to the convicts who had made it through the first gate of the prison.
Ten of them made it outside the prison walls but two were later arrested because they could not get onboard an Urvan bus that was to be their getaway vehicle.
One of the two arrested told journalists the group knew about the plot to break jail.
He did not give his name but confirmed that he has already served one year of a 50-year sentence.
The jail breakers had an accident on the Kojokrom-Ketan Road and abandoned the Urvan bus and left three of the G3 rifles. They then seized another Ford saloon car and fled.
So far personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Police, Navy and the Prisons officers are patrolling the city to find the jail breakers.
The former Director of Prisons at the Western Region DDP Chris Larvie said the current location of the prison is in itself a breach of security because it is located right in the middle of town.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Hamidu Mahamah expressed confidence that the joint security team will arrest the convicts
