Former Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Maxwell Kofi Jumah will be put before court today in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi for a lawless behaviour on Saturday.

He is alleged to have destroyed electoral materials during the Asokwa parliamentary primary of the opposition New Patriotic Party on June 13 which was won by the incumbent, Patricia Appiagyei.

He was arrested, handcuffed and whisked away by the police before he could cause any further damage.

The police are expected to press two charges against him: breaching the peace and causing damage to electoral materials.

Mr. Kofi Jumah, a former Deputy Local Government and Rural Development Minister in the Kufuor government, spent a greater part of the weekend behind bars.  He was only released on bail Sunday evening from the Asokwa Police cell.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officers in the Ashanti region, Gordon Ahianyo told Joy News, Mr. Jumah will have to answer for his actions in court today.

“He was arrested and charged for two counts, i.e. conducts conducive to the breach of peace and causing unlawful damage, that is, destroying electoral materials. EC officials came to our premises and gave us their statement,” he said.

If found guilty, Mr. Jumah will face a prison term of up to two years or a fine, or both.

Lawyer and host of Newsfile on Joy FM and MultiTV, Samson Lardy Anyenini says the politician’s charge of destroying election materials could land him in big trouble.

"If found guilty, he could pay a fine and/or go to jail for up to two years. He would then from the date of expiration of the term of imprisonment be disqualified from being registered as a voter and from voting for at least five years", he told Myjoyonline.
