General Salute was crowned the champion of the Vanguard Assurance Challenge Cup overcoming a stiff challenge from champion Mr.K and Sly Mongoose on Saturday at the Accra Turf Club in Borteyman.
General Salute which was ridden by top Jockey Daniel Abeka from Godwin Cos Quaye stables was given the general’s salute after obtaining his second consecutive victory in two weeks.
General spanned a distance of 1,600 kilometers in a time of two minutes sixteen seconds to annex the trophy in a competition which numbered up to 17 jockeys. The 2nd and 3rd placed winners received surveyors from sponsors Vanguard whilst 1st placed Daniel Abeka received a trophy as well as surveyors.
In the opening event, five horses namely Marie Crus, SHATTER, Let Them Say, High Rise and Ghana’s Pride competed for the Division 4B race which covered a distance of 1,000 km. Marie Crus from Nii Yemo Odoi stables emerged as the winner finishing in a time of a minute and twenty seven seconds.
In another race, Jockeys E. Derry (Good Name), C.Ampah (Barikisu), G.Abbey (Mercedes), J.Mensah (Laila), David Ahenkwah (Larro) and J.Lamptey (By His Grace) competed for the honors but it was the managed to put the cherry on the cake elapsing a time of 1.25seconds with covered distance of 1,000km.
The race will resume in mid November at the same venue to justify which horse has the fastest legs.
