Some hospitals in the country are compelling trainee nurses to pay as high as 800 cedis for practical attachment to enable the hospitals purchase basic items such as gloves.
But the Ghana Registered Nurses Association is not happy about it and wants hospitals which charge trainee nurses fees before allowing them to conduct practicals to desist from the act.
Vice President of the Association, Kwame Adinkra Amo told Joy News most district hospitals have disregarded a directive from the Health Ministry asking them to stop the practice.
“Students who were sent out to do their clinicals, hospitals are collecting 500 cedis from them, some 800 cedis before they allow them to take care of the sick,” Mr Adinkra Amo said.
He said when the Association enquired from the hospitals what the money is used for, they claimed “they are going to use it to buy gloves”.
Some big hospitals including Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are engaging the ignoble act, he claimed.
The Health Ministry has been unavailable for comment on the matter.
