Members of the Sagnerigu District Disaster Management Committee in the Northern region are locked up in an emergency meeting to respond to the plight of hundreds of residents in the area who have been displaced following torrential rains.
The downpour has wrecked havoc to the properties of residents in 16 communities in the district and injuring scores of other residents.
The affected communities are Sagnerigu-Kukuo, Larini, Kpalsi, Kpawumo, Narun, Dimale among others.
When Joy News' Hashmim Mohammed visited the communities Wednesday afternoon, many of the displaced persons were still struggling to seek temporal accommodation.
Many residents had the roofing of their houses completely ripped off with some houses totally raised to the ground.
Properties such as clothing, foodstuffs, electrical appliances like refrigerators, television sets among others worth hundreds of cedis have all been destroyed by the rainstorm.
Suweiba Issah, a mother of two and a resident of Kpalsi, said her clothes, valuable documents and has left them stranded. She adds that the Islamic school behind her house has also been destroyed.
The downpour has uprooted Electricity poles with power in them posing a danger to the residents.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sagnerigu, Alhassan Mohammed Surugudoo tells Hashmim Mohammed that the District Disaster Management Committee is meeting to respond to the plight of the displaced persons.
“We will go back to see what we can do at our level and even appeal to the regional coordinating council, the central government and even philanthropic organizations and individuals to come to the people affected,” Mr. Surugudoo said.
He said, for now, he cannot tell what aid his office will be able to provide for the affected people.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have begun the registration of the affected persons of the rainstorm.
