A 42-year-old concrete block moulder at Dodowa in the Greater Accra region, Kobina Aperkor has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for causing harm and possessing arms without authority.
He pleaded guilty on both counts and was subsequently convicted on his own plea by the Dodowa Magistrate court last Friday. Both charges are to run concurrently.
Also, the convict, who claimed to be hunting for the past 30 years, was to pay a fine of 20 penalty units, representing GH¢240.
In default, Kobina would serve another month in hard labour at the Akuse Prison.
Briefing Myjoyonline.com, the Dodowa District Police Commander, Superintendent Samuel Kwesi Ofori said at about 2 am on August 6, 2014, Kobina Aperkor, a block moulder and native of Dodowa Aperkor, a settler community, went hunting for bush meat around the Chenku forest in Dodowa.
On reaching a distance of about 30 meters away from a farm hut where the complainant, Isaac Narh and his wife, Georgina Adzo Nagatey, were having a nap, Kobina apparently saw an animal, which was lying behind Georgina and hurriedly shot at it with his single barreled gun.
It later turned out to be the complainant’s foreign dog, which he had killed.
In that event, Supt. Ofori mentioned that some of the pellets from the gun shot injured the lower buttocks and the upper right elbow of Georgina, aged 32.
While the 33-year-old farmer, Isaac, sustained injuries on his feet, the upper left elbow and the left thigh.
They have since been receiving treatment at both the Korle Bu Teaching and the Dodowa hospitals.
The police said since Kobina failed to produce documents covering the weapon, the court issued a warrant for its confiscation.
