Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aspiring National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says he fears his outspoken nature could get him into trouble amid what he describes as growing concerns about political targeting and selective justice.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Mr Aboagye said he does not feel safe because of his willingness to speak openly on political and national issues.

His comments follow his earlier concerns about what he described as selective application of justice and the need to protect the independence of Ghana’s institutions.

Mr Aboagye said political power changes hands and warned that actions taken against opponents while in government could set a precedent that may later affect those who benefit from such decisions.

“It may be CPP, it may be PNC, be it PNP, but what you are basically telling the country is that tomorrow, when another party is in power, you see, no government will be in power forever,” he said.

He argued that Ghana’s history shows that governments eventually change, adding that even periods of military rule did not prevent transitions of power.

“Even the military, even with guns, even when people were being dragged from their rooms and being shot in the head in this country, there was a change of government,” he said.

Mr Aboagye stressed that his concerns were not about revenge if his party returns to power, but about the consequences of establishing what he described as a dangerous precedent.

“No, I haven’t said that. But I am saying that precedent becomes law,” he said.

Asked whether he believed such a precedent could be used against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the future, Mr Aboagye said his position was based on genuine concerns.

“That’s why I’m speaking against it. I’m genuinely worried about it. I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I’ve written to the Chief Justice. I personally, I don’t feel safe,” he said.

Explaining why he felt unsafe, Mr Aboagye said his personality as someone who frequently speaks and debates publicly contributes to his concerns.

“Because I talk. I can’t stop talking. I can’t. I love to talk. I love to debate,” he said.

However, he clarified that he was not claiming his life was under threat, but rather that his outspoken nature could expose him to problems.

“No, I feel my mouth will put me into trouble. That is what I feel,” he said.

He added that the issue extends beyond him and reflects concerns among others who believe freedom of expression must be protected.

“It is not just me. So the 1000s of people who are coming on the streets tomorrow. That is how most of them feel,” he said.

Mr Aboagye said democracy depends on citizens being able to express themselves freely without fear of being targeted.

“If we don’t have anything at all in Ghana, it is our free speech, it’s our democracy, it’s the fact that we are able to freely express ourselves without any fear of being targeted,” he said.
