President John Evans Atta Mills says he would not be distracted by unwarranted criticisms from political opponents, being confident that his government is on course with its 'Better Ghana Agenda'. The President said this in Tokyo, Japan where he met with the Ghanaian community as part of his state visit to that country. He noted that although he welcomes constructive criticisms, he would not allow himself to be bothered by criticisms which are only meant to distract him from his agenda. President Mills said he always reminds himself of the promises he made to Ghanaians prior to the 2008 elections that brought his party into power and would remain committed to them. “I do not intend therefore to be distracted from what I have promised to do for that dear nation of ours. I am still focused on achieving a Better Ghana for our people. We want to alleviate poverty and we have taken a number of initiatives. It has not been easy because we came to meet challenges, but we are not daunting," he added. The President further stated that "our problem in the nation is that very often, politicians have shouted from the rooftops that they are there to save the ordinary people, but as soon as they get into office, they develop amnesia. It is my hope and prayer that we make a difference”. He reminded Ghanaians in Japan to do away with all forms of divisive tendencies since they are one people irrespective of their political affiliations. He said government has identified the fault lines that inhibits development and is seriously working to fix them. President Mills however called for unity of purpose to achieve the desired development and growth whilst abhorring political divisiveness which according to him is on the rise. The chairman of the council of Ghanaian associations in Japan, Professor Theophilus Asamoah, who represented the Ghanaian community expressed joy at the president’s visit to the country, and assured that they will continue to encourage their Japanese counterparts to choose Ghana as their preferred investment destination.
