Asamoah Gyan says he will not force himself to be fit for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations if it will be detrimental to Ghana’s course at the tournament.
The on-loan Sunderland striker at UAE club Al Ain insists the Black Stars is strong enough to cope with his absence if he is unable to make a full recovery from a hamstring injury by the time the competition starts in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
“Like I said before when I am 100% fit everyone knows what I can do so the most important thing is to get fit first,” Gyan said upon his arrival in Ghana on Thursday.
“I am really important to the team and I will do anything possible to get fit for the Nations Cup.
“I will try to get fit but if I am unable I believe there are other players who can play; the Black is an all round team and I wouldn’t want to draw the team back.”
The 24-year-old will start treatment immediately with Ghana’s medical team and will subsequently get a fare share of the horse placenta treatment from renowned Serbian therapist Mariana Kovacevic in the quest to get him fully fit by the time Ghana plays its opening game against Botswana on January 24.
