Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has strongly defended her integrity, saying he has never accepted a bribe to decide a case.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing on Wednesday, June 25, Justice Torkornoo said she remains confident in her integrity, describing it as her “personal treasure” after decades of service in Ghana’s judiciary.
“I am confident that in my journey as a lawyer, as a judge and now as Chief Justice, there is no one person in this country who can look at me in the eye and accuse me of taking a bribe to decide a case,” she stated.
She suggested that the ongoing proceedings leading to her suspension may be part of a broader attempt to oust her from office, regardless of whether there are lawful grounds for such action.
“So what if these current proceedings are being carefully staged to result in my removal as Chief Justice, even if there’s no lawful justification?” she asked.
Justice Torkornoo warned that any attempt to remove her without due process would be based on “lies and violations of law.”
She expressed disbelief that such irregularities could occur in the country’s judiciary, especially after her long service under four different presidents.
“All I have stated shows that any such action would have been done on the basis of lies and violations of law and due process," she said.
Justice Torkornoo continued, saying, "As a career judge who has served under four presidents from the High Court through the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, I could never have imagined such irregularities possible if I had not personally encountered them.”
