The Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (IWEN-Ghana), a non-profit organisation, is advocating the introduction of what they termed the Government of National Unity to replace the existing multi-party democracy practised in Ghana.
According to them, the unsuitability of the multi-party system is evidenced by the fact that it has failed to deliver the goods in Africa due to its propensity for violence, division and instability.
IWEN-Ghana further advocates the adoption of the district assembly concept of non-partisan politics by the National Assembly.
A statement signed by the Co-Founder and Executive Director of IWEN-Ghana, Celestina Andoh, said in adopting this system, every constituency will elect its own Member of Parliament (MP) without the involvement of political parties.
The statement also noted that upon the election of the MPs, the members will elect one of their members to be the president, the same way the district assembly members chose their presiding members.
The organisation stated that a close study of party politics in Ghana over the past years revealed that no single political party could save Ghana or any African country practising multi-party democracy.
“In Africa, multi-party democracy has become a recipe for violence and wars leading to bloodshed and political instability.
The divisive nature of the system has put Africa into an inferno of political feuds with no end in sight, thereby creating refugee problems on a large scale," the statement pointed out.
