Family and friends of the jailed Bawku Central MP, Adamu Dramani Sakande traumatized by his prolonged admission at the Cardiothoracic center at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital should be heaving a sigh of relief. It’s now confirmed; President Mahama has granted him presidential pardon because of his deteriorating health conditions.
Mr Dramani was sentenced to two years imprisonment after he was found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving a public officer.
A cattle dealer, Sumaila Biebiel, challenged his eligibility to contest the Parliamentary elections, arguing the NPP MP had multiple nationalities at the time he filed to contest the elections – a clear violation of the Constitution which bars persons with dual nationality from vying for legislative seats.
Mr Dramani rejected the claims and spent most part of his term in Parliament fighting the case in court.
In a twist to his legal challenges, the state brought a criminal action against him, accusing him of false declaration, perjury and deceiving a public officer. He was consequently convicted of these and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
But he has now been granted pardon on health grounds.
John Jinapor, spokesperson of President Mahama, said the decision is purely on medical grounds.
