The Member of Parliament for the Jirapa constituency, Dr. Francis Bawaana Dakurah has kicked against the celebration of the June 4 uprising.
He is convinced the event has the tendency to erode national unity, reconciliation, and peace and has the tendency to divide the National Democratic Congress and the nation as a whole.
He made the statement at a press conference at Jirapa in the Upper West Region, adding the area has enjoyed unprecedented levels of developments largely because of the peace and stability the area has seen.
‘‘When one compares the events that led to June 4th Uprising and the subsequent loss of lives; fine military officers like Rear Admiral Amedume, Col. Roger Felli, Brigadier Utuka, Air Vice Marshall Boakye and others lost their lives.
“Today there are people who on disguise owned canned factories, chocolate factories and they walk about and yet they want to celebrate June 4 instead of reflecting and reconciling the peace for this country after thirty something years,’’ he insisted.
The Jirapa MP added that June 4 has become part of the history of the country and called for it to be commemorated rather than celebrated in the spirit of national reconciliation, unity and peace.
The Jirapa MP also used the occasion to mark his third anniversary in Parliament following his victory in a by-election and highlighted some of his achievements.
He stated that on assumption of office provision of good drinking water was his topmost priority and consequently has dug 12 boreholes.
The beneficiary institutions and communities include Jirapa Senior High School, Ullo Senior High School,Chapuri (for late hon. Edward Salia`s mother), Han, Sabuli, Kusoglo, Yipiel-Baazu, Tugo, DuoriNaa`s Palace, the Catholic Parish, Gbari.
Nine more have been awarded to be dug at Jirapa Vapuo, TampalaKusiele, Lang-oollo, Vinving, Jangvuur, Chapuri, Tizza-Baguu, Mwankuri and Kunzokala.
On the rural electrification project, Dr. Bawaana stated the district is one of the highest beneficiaries of the current government rural electrification programme with about sixty communities to be connected to the national grid by September 2012.
The first phase of these communities would be completed at the end of June with the remaining to be completed by August 2012.
He thanked the constituency executives, ward executives and party activists for the confidence reposed in him despite the attacks and vilification they go through. He hoped that they would still be with him and the party to ensure total victory in the December presidential and parliamentary election.
