What started as a desperate call to sell a laptop turned into an outpouring of generosity, as listeners of Joy FM’s Drive Time with Lexis rallied to raise GH¢12,000 to help Akorfa, a young listener facing difficulty paying her rent.
Speaking on the programme on January 13, Ms Akorfa explained that she had planned to sell her fairly used laptop for GH¢12,000, money she needed to cover her two-year rent, after a trusted individual failed to assist her.
“I’ve used it for four months—only four months—because I needed to secure my rent, and I put my hope in someone, but that person disappointed me,” she told Lexis during the live broadcast.
She recounted taking the laptop to Accra Central, particularly Kingsway, but being offered only GH¢8,000. A later attempt at Circle brought even lower offers.
“When I took it to Circle, they were mentioning GH¢5,000,” Ms Akorfa said, frustrated and disheartened.
Feeling low, Ms Akorfa tuned in to Drive Time with Lexis, and the discussion on the show inspired her to take a chance and call in.
“I was really down, so I said, ‘Let me just listen to Drive Time to lift my spirits. When you brought up the topic, I felt I could relate. Maybe if I call and say I’m selling my laptop, someone might help me,” she explained.
Her goal was simple: find someone who could afford her asking price.
“I was expecting maybe someone would reach out and buy it because most of your listeners are working and can afford it,” she said.
Moved by her story, listeners of Drive Time with Lexis rallied together, raising GH¢12,000—enough to cover her rent without her having to sell the laptop.
Overjoyed, Ms Akorfa expressed her heartfelt gratitude:
“I’d like to thank everyone who moved with compassion to help me secure my rent. I really appreciate it. God richly bless you, and I pray He replenishes all that you’ve lost in helping me.”
