The condition of one of the two pedestrian footbridges at the Kaneshie Market is in a sorry state and poses a serious threat to the life of pedestrians and traders.
The two footbridges which are about three hundred meters apart facilitate safe crossing on the Kaneshie/Odorkor Highway and are used by thousands of pedestrians on a daily basis.
The deteriorating condition of the smaller one is particularly precarious. Not only has the footbridge developed serious cracks, there are also gaping holes on the concrete with the rusty nuts begging to be replaced.
As commuters use the bridge, they feel the obvious weak structure shake beneath them. Months ago one hawker had this to say about the poor state of the footbridge: “The bridge is shaking and causing fear in commuters since they are afraid the bridge would fall off one day. They complain a lot to us traders as if we caused the damage. We wish the bridge would be fixed as soon as possible. Even though we are afraid of selling on the bridge, we also don’t have any place to sell our wares”.
Months later the condition of the footbridge appears to be taking a major turn for the worst. But as commuters move on it daily, there’s only one surety - the bridge is gradually inching to a collapse. Such occurrence would not only be fatal to pedestrians but also to hawkers who sell their wares just beneath the bridge as well as vehicles plying the road.
One pedestrian accused the Accra Metropolitan Authorities (AMA) of neglecting the footbridge after persistent calls on them to repair before something disastrous happens.
Such was the deteriorated nature of the second footbridge that it had to be closed down for rehabilitation works to be carried out.
Upon its reopening, it was obvious that the repair works carried out on the bridge were just patches on the gaping holes on the footbridge.
