The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi would from next year send some of its doctors and other para-medical staff to China for post-graduate training under a special exchange programme.
A memorandum of understanding would be signed early next year to facilitate the visit of the Chinese team to the hospital to explore areas of possible cooperation.
Professor Ohene Adjei, the Chief Executive, told the media during an end of year interaction in Kumasi that three universities in China including the Wenzhoa Medical College had been selected for fees-free programme.
He said China had evolved not only in orthodox medical practice but other areas in alternate medicine and technology and it is about time Ghana learned from its scientific and medical breakthrough.
Giving a broad over view of the hospital’s achievements so far and its vision for next year, he said the hospital would start renovation works on its old buildings to address all structural defects.
A team from South Africa would arrive to carry out inspection of the ”Block A”- the Maternity and the Children’s blocks, to assess the cost after which, they would raise money to start the project.
He conceded that there would be challenges and this had to do with where to relocate patients on admission in those blocks.
Prof Ohene Adjei said due to the hospital’s huge expansion programme, it has now been faced with another challenge, that of space, a situation which could force it to build some of the facilities outside - in a satellite location.
The Chief Executive’s bungalow is now being refurbished to serve as a guest house. Additionally, one block of nurse’s quarters would be completed next year.
