Thanks to a message attached to an international money transfer, an Ivorian national, Jaview Tchimou, 32, has been arrested by the Madina Divisional Police Command in Accra for allegedly kidnapping two children.The children are Bernice Ntsomo, nine, an Ivorian, and Sandra Adogo, 12, a Togolese.Briefing the Times in Accra on Tuesday, the Madina Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Allandu, said on December 6, the police received information from a bank at Adenta about a man who they suspected to be either a thief or a kidnapper.Officials of the bank disclosed that on the afternoon of December 6, Tchimou arrived at the bank with two children to collect money through Western Union. Attached to the money, which was sent from Togo, was the warning; “It is fraud, call police.”Subsequently, the bank gave him part of the money and put him under surveillance. The bank said ion receiving the amount, Tchimou frowned and left the banking hall with the children. He was heard frantically making calls to someone from whom he demanded more funds, failure of which that person would lose the children.The bank officials then invited the police to pick him up for questioning.Mrs. Allandu said it was later that the police got information from their counterparts in Togo that Tchimou was being sought for for allegedly kidnapping the children from the Ivory Coast and Togo, respectively.The Togo police stated that Tchimou kidnapped Bernice from the Ivory Coast on August 6 and Sandra sometime in October.She said the police learned that after kidnapping the children, Tchimou called their parents to release money to him through Western Union before he would release them.Though hundreds CFA were reported to have been sent to Tchimou as requested, he refused to release the children as promised.Mrs. Allandu said immediately Tchimou was arrested she quickly in¬formed the Togo Police who arrived with Sandra’s parents. She said Sandra’s mother broke down in tears on seeing her daughter.The case has been referred to the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) to conduct further investigations.When the Times followed up to the of¬fices of INTERPOL at the Police Headquarters, an official of the unit said INTERPOL had earlier received information from their counterparts in the Ivory Coast that they had also mounted a search for the arrest of Tchimou for alleged kidnapping.The source said the police are conducting further investigation into the case after which the suspect will be taken to the Ivory Coast to face prosecution.Source: The Times
