One of the five presidential aspirants disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) from contesting in the 2020 General Elections has called on President Akufo-Addo to intervene in the matter.
Kofi Koranteng, who was contesting as an Independent Candidate stated that President Akufo-Addo must hold the EC to its mandate and have the decision reversed.
“We are not asking the President to do favours for us. We are asking the president to charge the EC to do what they need to do,” he said.
Mr Koranteng was among 17 candidates who filed to contest in the December 7 presidential polls. However, he along with 4 other aspirants were disqualified on grounds of forgery and can no longer contest following the EC's disqualification.
It is alleged that signatures were forged and endorsees manufactured on their nomination forms.
Upon their disqualification, the EC gave assurances that the case will be forwarded to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), however, the disqualified aspirants are yet to be invited by the CID for further probe.
Nonetheless, Kofi Koranteng believes the EC is being truly undemocratic with the decision and has therefore urged President Akufo-Addo to intervene for the sake of the nation's democracy.
“This is the time he [the President] needs to step in with his administration to say the [EC’s] process has been undemocratic,” he added.
