The Herbal Medicine Department of the Kokofu General Hospital in the Ashanti region has recorded a near perfect treatment of diabetic foot sores.
Hospital records show some of the legs which were due for amputation were revived after treatment by the department.
A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound that occurs in approximately 15 percent of patients with diabetes, and is commonly located on the bottom of the foot. Of those who develop a foot ulcer, six percent will be hospitalized due to infection or other ulcer-related complications.
Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic leg amputations in the United States, and approximately 14 to 24 percent of patients with diabetes who develop a foot ulcer have an amputation.
One of the patients, a 50-year-old lady has been treating her sore for the past seven years without improvement.
Though she was referred to a tertiary health facility, lack of funds prevented her from accessing care.
Fortunately, after visiting the unit, the wound started showing improvement in 3 days.
The head of the department, Emmanuel Amoapim Boateng who has been leading the intervention noted that treatment is free for Health Insurance holders.
He also pointed out the medications are less costly than the orthodox counterparts.
