The Komenda Sugar Factory has been shut down for maintenance, the PRO of Trade Ministry Akrasi Sarpong has confirmed.

Joy News understands that the raw material –sugarcane- has entered its lean season hence the need to close down the revamped factory for maintenance.

Joy News Richard Kwadwo Nyarko who visited the factory explained on Joy News channel Pulse Friday that “ there is no sign of activity as far as sugar production is concerned”.

The factory is expected to resume operation in October, management has indicated. The shut down was expected after management said that the factory would go on a temporary break later in June.

The management was reacting to reports that the factory had been shut down two days after it was commissioned by President Mahama on May 30.

In the meantime, the management has noted that the break will also allow them to focus attention on the factory’s own sugarcane farm which is expected to be ready for harvesting in four months time.

According to Richard Kwadwo Nyarko, the workers staged a demonstration on Wednesday over delayed payment of their wages.

He explained that the workers were initially paid daily, but were later told to expect their wages to be paid weekly.

But for at least two weeks, their monies had not been paid.

The workers wore red arm bands and demonstrated for over two hours but ended after police intervention on the factory premises.

The workers are still unpaid at the time of filing the report.
