Normal operations have resumed at the Intensive Care Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital following restoration of broken down life-supporting machines.Doctors at the hospital suspended services at the centre early this year due to the grounded equipment.Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah’s under-cover investigations did not only reveal a number of people had died as a result, but also prompted quick response from officialdom.Then Minister of Health, Joseph Yieleh Chireh called a crisis meeting involving sector ministry, maintenance contractors and board of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to address the matter.Although management of the KATH had wished the 5-year maintenance contract between German Gertech Technology was abrogated, Health Minister Yieleh Chireh charged the contractors to expedite action on repair of the equipments.The contractors blamed political uprising in Egypt for the delayed delivery of machine parts ordered from the manufacturer’s Africa office in Cairo.But medical staff at the hospital are happy media reports on the situation have made a positive impact.All but one of nine broken down ventilators have been repaired and put to use to improve health delivery at Ghana’s second largest teaching hospital.Personnel of Gertech Technology, maintenance contractors completed repair work on January 27.Officials of the Anesthesia Directorate have since been test-running the machines at the Emergency Center, with four patients currently on support.A report on the state of the restored ventilators will soon be sent to the Ministry of Health.Head of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Directorate, Dr. Gabriel Boakye, tells Nhyira FM doctors are excited at the turn of events. “They are happy now with no agitations so far, though they were unhappy at first”.He says the only challenge is how to ensure constant and adequate supply of oxygen to feed the unit.A doctor, whose name is withheld, told this reporter “you and Multimedia Company deserve special award for this life-saving report you made”.The doctor, who could not hide his joy, called for a national award for the reporter.
