The Member of Parliament for Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Maxell Kofi Jumah has said that former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings rushed in her quest to object the misuse of the NDC’s logo saying “she should have done this on December 6”.
According to the Asokwa MP, the approach to claim the logo should have been done a day to the election 2012 in order to expose the bad leadership exhibited by the Mills administration since 2009.
Mrs. Rawlings is threatening to take back the logo she claimed to have designed and registered in her name shortly after complaining of party disunity and infringement on her intellectual property.
In a letter written to the National Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, by Nana Konadu’s solicitors, it stated that “as you may be aware, our client holds the copyright to the political party logo being used by the NDC party as its registered political party symbol.
Apart from Nana Konadu, other members like Professor Kwame Addo are also claiming ownership of the NDC party logo.
The party is yet to officially take decision on the issues raised by the former first lady and the former Vice Chair of the NDC, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings but some members of the party have expressed dismay about the matter.
However, speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme, Ekosii-Sen Monday, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah revealed that he is happy about the turn of events in the NDC ahead of the elections.
He described the claiming of the NDC logo by Nana Konadu as unprecedented in the history of politics and multiparty democracy. "It is unprecedented because for the first time in history of Ghana, a founder of a political party is rising against the party; a member of that same party is claiming ownership of a logo and members disrespecting the founder and rules of the party. It is so laughable”.
The former KMA Boss in the erstwhile NPP administration stressed that the issue is becoming complex because the accounts given by those claiming ownership of the logo are different.
“In building a house the one who made the blocks, the one who mixed the mortar, the one who designed the house can never say the house belongs to them but the one who commissioned them to build the house. I think Prof. Kwame Addo’s assertion that he is the creator of the logo is unfounded because he was a worker for the Rawlingses”.
Hon. Kofi Jumah asserted that the word intellectual property is complex and encompasses a lot of things. “So I admonish those attacking Nana Konadu, to go to court and challenge her. How do we know whether Konadu created it and gave to the husband to be used as the party’s logo?”
“She has registered it and until the party challenges it in court nobody can say anything. Probably the name NDC might be for someone too so the NDC must try and resolve it. I am sad Konadu did not wait till a day to election 2012 before raising the matter but it is not late though”.
He asked Ghanaians not to review the mandate of President Mills “because he was unable to look after a common party logo; how can he look after the whole country?”
In a sharp rebuttal, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie said the NDC is equally happy that the issue has popped up early in order to rectify it before the worst happens.
“God does things mysteriously because we wouldn’t have known the repercussions if it had come late. In fact it has gingered the party members to work hard and retain Mills in power”.
He says the registration of the NDC logo by copyright office shows the flaws in some institutions of the country.
