Resident doctors at the Medicine Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are calling on authorities to expedite action on the construction of the isolation area to enable them handle suspected Ebola cases.
In a five-point resolution addressed to the Medical Director at the hospital, they also demanded that a holding bay be provided outside the emergency room.
The resolution continued that a well-documented workable plan of managing health workers exposed by virtue of coming into contact with suspected cases should be put in place while making adequate provisions for protective clothing, gloves and goggles.
Again, they requested for the urgent training of medical staff on how to use the protective equipment.
Titled: “Concerns about the preparedness of the hospital to handle Ebola cases”, they said “we note with concern the total absence of an isolation area, proper holding bay and adequate protective equipment for health staff including doctors, nurses and orderlies who are at the forefront of handling emergencies and the first point of contact, coupled with the rapid spread of the pandemic in the neighbouring countries.”
Hoping that management would address the issues raised with all seriousness “to make us feel more protected as we give off our best on daily basis to avert a state of panic, anxiety and the likely reluctance to attend to suspected cases because the above listed measures have not been implemented.”
They urged management to address their concerns within 72 hours.
